Global Black Gay Men Connect,( GBGMC) Welcomes Micheal Ighodaro as First Executive Director


Global Black Gay Men Connect (GBGMC) is excited to welcome Micheal Ighodaro as our  inaugural Executive Director. As a co-founder of GBGMC, Micheal steps into this role, reinforcing his foundational commitment to the organization.

Micheal comes to us with a rich background in advocacy and leadership. Prior to joining GBGMC, he served as the Interim Co-Executive Director at Prevention Access Campaign and held a position as Program Manager at AVAC, Micheal is a member of several LGBTQI organizations boards,  His journey to the United States, stemming from seeking asylum to escape persecution in Nigeria, highlights his resilience and dedication to human rights.

GBGMC’s Board Chair :  Richard Lusimbo “Michael is highly skilled and knowledgeable in advocating, strategizing, and managing operations. He has a proven track record of working closely with partner networks that focus on Key Populations, as well as being a leader in the LGBTQI community on a global scale. With his strong connections to organizations like WHO, UNAIDS, PEPFAR, AVAC, Health GAP, Prevention Access Campaign, FHI, Outright Action International, GLADD, and the Global Fund, Michael is well-prepared to effectively guide the important next phase of GBGMC’s efforts to promote the rights and dignity of Black Gay Men and Key Populations worldwide.“

Michael states, “I am thrilled to be taking on this role as a Black Gay Man. As the first Executive Director of GBGMC, I understand the expectations of our community. I am determined to build an institution that will play a pivotal role in eliminating HIV in our community, one that will fight against white supremacy, and build local power to intervene in the homophobic and racist violence inflicted on our community. I am thrilled to be leading GBGMC’s mission to usher in a new era of global human rights, global health, and democracy inclusion. I hope you will join me to ensure we speak truth to power in everything we do.”

Micheal’s story gained international attention through the HBO documentary “The Legend of The Underground” in 2021. He has been a prominent voice for HIV Prevention and treatment for Black gay men and other Key Populations. Notably, he was the plenary speaker at the 2016 International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa. Micheal’s leadership extends to co-founding Global Black Pride, an initiative now under GBGMC’s umbrella, showcasing his broad impact and vision for the LGBTQI community worldwide.
